Jewelry Cleaning Tips
Did you know that sterling silver can be cleaned with paste toothpaste (not gel) if you do not have a polishing cloth or sterling polish? Yep! Dab some toothpaste on your piece. Be sure to avoid getting it on any stones that your piece may have to be safe,. Wipe gently with a clean soft cloth. If the paste has gotten into any nooks and crannies of your jewelry, rinse away with warm water. You really should not continually polish your sterling jewelry. It's best to invest in a nice soft polishing cloth. They are very inexpensive and last a long time.
Are Your Clip Earring Backs Dark From Age?
On some jewelry, you would definitely want the patina to stay. But maybe not on earring backs.
Many vintage clip earring backs are made of brass or other metal that will polish up quite nicely with Simichrome polish. You will be shocked at how they can shine up. Below, the first photo is a before and after of a pair of vintage Western Germany clip earring backs for example. The backs are brass. Notice how shiny the earring back is on the right after a quick polish! You can even see my camera's reflection in the metal.
And Simichrome polish is usually the go-to for testing bakelite. Dab a bit of polish on the piece you want to test and rub with a cotton swab. The swab will turn a dark mustard color. But be sure it is not a piece that has a paint finish on it. You may be tricked into thinking that it is genuine bakelite because the swab turned color, but you just may be seeing the finish rubbing off. A tube of Simichrome goes a long way too. See the second photo for an example of what a positive bakelite test will look like on a bangle bracelet.

Who Wore The First Pants and When?
No, it wasn’t "King Levis".
It is said that the first pant wearers were horse-riding nomads from Central Asia around 3,000 years ago!
I guess riding horses bare-bottomed got very cold and old pretty fast.
But what about gals?
"Women in America began wearing pants in a more socially accepted manner during the late 19th century, particularly gaining traction with the women's suffrage movement in the early 20th century. However, it wasn't until the women's liberation movement of the 1960s and 1970s that pants became widely accepted as everyday attire for women."
I never wore pants until the '70s in Jr. High. (showing my age) The principal of our school had the nerve to say that if gals wore pants, it would be too distracting! LOL! Never mind the mini skirts and micro mini skirts we were wearing back then! He didn't make any sense whatsoever. We actually protested and walked out of school. And I remember him saying that we would be expelled if we wore pants. Well, we walked out, we weren't expelled, and we eventually got our way! I am very proud that I was part of the fight to wear pants in school and that our protest helped to change the clothing history of our school. Girl power!
