Lovely carved Geisha girl necklace with Geisha netsuke. I researched this necklace and I believe this is carved mammoth tusk fossil ivory, NOT elephant tusk which is illegal to sell. This was most likely made in Japan.

This necklace measures 32" long. It is hand knotted in between beads. The Geisha netsuke measures 3" long. It has some yellowing on the beads where the beads rest on the neck.

The netsuke is to be worn on the side. Lovely etched flowers and leaves and it is signed on the center back. It weighs 50 grams on my scale and it is in gorgeous shape with no chips or cracks.

More info. Mammoth tusk is not illegal to sell.

From a website that makes carved mammoth jewelry:

"Unlike African and modern elephant ivory, mammoths have been extinct for 10,000 years, therefore mammoth ivory (fossil ivory) is not listed in the Appendices to the CITES. As such, it is not subject to control under the Animals and Plants (Protection of Endangered Species) Ordinance, Cap. 187.

All mammoth ivory tusk (fossil ivory) itself is already a precious antique. Because of the geographical range in Alaska and Siberia , Mammuthus primigenus tusks have been well preserved. Therefore, Mammuthus primigenus is the only extinct proboscidan which consistently provides high quality, valuable and precious carve-able ivory."
